Nature on your plate

In the Saimaa region, food begins in nature. Clean waters, deep forests and open fields provide ingredients that often travel only a short distance — from lake or woodland straight to your plate. Freshwater fish is central to local cuisine, especially crispy fried vendace from the morning’s catch, complemented by berries, mushrooms, wild herbs and other foraged flavours.

A taste for every season

Saimaa’s flavours follow the rhythm of the year. Summer brings fresh greens, new potatoes and sun‑ripened strawberries. Autumn offers a rich harvest of berries and mushrooms, while winter leans on warming, preserved flavours. Sweet moments are part of the experience too — from cinnamon buns and soft sweet breads to traditional berry‑filled treats like mustikkarättänä, inviting you to slow down and savour the moment.

Crafted by local makers

Restaurants, cafés and small producers work closely with farmers, fishermen and foragers to bring these ingredients to life. Local bakeries keep cherished traditions alive with classics like Karlian pies ("karjalanpiirakka"), still made by hand across the region.

The D.O. Saimaa label highlights this connection — a mark of authenticity, quality and responsible production. Here, food is more than a meal. It’s a pure, seasonal reflection of the Saimaa landscape.
