Saimaa offers endless hiking opportunities through forests, along lakeshores, and across landscapes shaped by the Ice Age. Trails take you past exposed bedrock, sandy eskers, and ancient shoreline formations that tell the story of the region’s past.

Well-marked routes make exploring easy, and maps and local tips are available at visitor centres. Along the way, lean-to shelters ("laavus") and campfire sites invite you to pause and enjoy the quiet of Finnish nature at its most authentic.

Canoeing and kayaking are some of the best ways to experience Saimaa’s lake landscape up close. On the water, you move quietly through forested islands, sheltered bays, and wide open stretches, and feel closer to nature. Paddle at your own pace and discover places only accessible from the water – or join a guided kayaking tour, for example in the home waters of the Saimaa ringed seal.
