Puumala Archipelago Route

Cycle through 60 km long route across islands, cross the lake by ferry and experience Saimaa at its most scenic.

The Puumala Archipelago Route is a 60 km cycling route that takes you through some of the most iconic lake landscapes in Finland. Winding across islands, ridges and quiet countryside roads, the route offers a relaxed yet visually striking way to experience Saimaa.

Along the way, the scenery shifts constantly. Forests open into wide lake views, narrow roads follow the curves of the shoreline, and bridges and ferries connect island to island. It’s a route designed not for speed, but for slowing down and taking it all in.

One of the highlights of the journey is the ferry crossing between Lintusalo and Hurissalo. The Norppa II ferry carries cyclists across the water during the season, adding a unique rhythm to the route and making the lake itself part of the experience.

The route passes through Saimaa Geopark landscapes, where the traces of the Ice Age are visible in the surrounding ridges and rock formations. Along the way, you’ll also find local cafés, places to stay and peaceful spots for a break by the water.

The Puumala Archipelago Route is suitable for a day trip, but it’s best enjoyed without hurry. Take your time, stop often and let the surroundings shape your journey.

For those who want to continue, the route can be extended into the longer Saimaa Archipelago Route. Read more at outdooractive.
