Aboard RIB Saimaa, you will have the opportunity to explore Suvorov’s fascinating military canals with guided audio commentary. Narratives about the Russo-Swedish War and the Kukonharju and Käyhkää canals are available in Finnish, English, and Russian.
Aleksandr Vasilyevich Suvorov (1729–1800) was a Russian military leader and generalissimo, often referred to as the “general of generals”. His enduring fame stems from the fact that he never lost any of the approximately 60 battles he fought. In 1791, Catherine II tasked Suvorov with planning and overseeing the fortifications of Old Finland. He initiated the construction of new fortifications as well as the repair of existing ones. In addition, work began on four military canals – Kutvele, Käyhkää, Kukonharju, and Telataipale – which connected Lappeenranta and Olavinlinna.
