Lietvesi Scenic Road

Drive through one of Finland’s most beautiful lake landscapes – islands, bridges and unforgettable views along the Lietvesi Scenic Road.

The Lietvesi Scenic Road is one of the most iconic and photographed landscapes in Finland. Stretching between Mikkeli and Puumala along Road 62, the route winds through classic Finnish Lakeland scenery – forests, open waters and a maze of islands shaped by the Ice Age.

Completed in 1955, the road follows the natural forms of the landscape, crossing narrow ridges and rocky islands. The highlight of the journey is the Lietvesi bridge area, where the road seems to float across the lake, connecting a chain of small islands. This is one of the most striking views in the entire Lake Saimaa region.

Along the way, there are several places to stop and take in the scenery. The Lietvesi viewpoint offers a viewing platform and a small summer kiosk, making it an ideal place to pause, enjoy the landscape and capture memorable photos in every season. Whether in the bright light of summer or the colours of autumn, the views remain equally impressive.

The surrounding landscape is a perfect example of Saimaa’s unique character: labyrinthine waterways, rocky islands and long eskers formed by glacial processes thousands of years ago. The area also holds traces of ancient human activity, including a nearby hill fort with remnants of old defensive structures.

The Lietvesi Scenic Road is also part of popular cycling routes, including the Puumala Archipelago Route (60 km) and the longer Saimaa Archipelago Route (156 km). These routes take you through islands, bridges and ridge landscapes, offering a unique way to experience Lake Saimaa at a slower pace.

The Lietvesi Scenic Road is more than just a route from one place to another. It is a journey through the essence of Lake Saimaa – best experienced slowly, with time to stop, explore and take it all in.
