Hiiden Polut is a network of five interconnected hiking routes in the Lake Saimaa region, spanning Anttola (Mikkeli), Hiidenmaa (Juva) and the Neitvuori landscape area. The full trail system covers approximately 60 km in total, offering everything from short scenic walks to more demanding full-day hikes through some of South Savo’s most striking natural environments.
The trails vary in length and difficulty. The shortest option, Hiijje Silimukka, is only a few kilometres long and ideal for a relaxed nature walk with panoramic viewpoints, while the more demanding Hiidenkierros stretches to around 10–12 km and takes hikers deeper into the Neitvuori ridge landscapes. The longest continuous sections, such as Metsänväentaival (about 50 km), combine forest paths, old rural routes, lakeshores and historic countryside environments.
The routes pass through Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark sites, including the dramatic Enkelinpesä rock formation with its split boulder and ancient rock paintings, as well as the Neitvuori ridge, one of the highest points in South Savo. The surrounding Luonteri lake area further highlights the region’s Ice Age geology, with rugged ridges, erratic boulders and layered landscapes shaped by glacial movement.
Along the way, hikers will find well-maintained rest areas such as Hiidenkota, complete with a campfire site, as well as lean-tos, swimming spots and lake viewpoints that invite you to pause and enjoy the silence of Saimaa. In summer, many of the trail’s lakeside sections offer opportunities for a refreshing swim in clean, clear waters.
Access to the trail network is flexible: hikers can start from Hiidenmaa in Juva or from Anttola near Mikkeli (Neitvuorentie 660), choosing individual sections or combining routes for a multi-day adventure. Hiiden Polut offers a compact but richly varied introduction to the forests, ridges and lake panoramas that define the Saimaa region.
